HOPE is not a medical service and we don’t intend to give you medical advice on the risks you may face if you have an abortion.

However, as with all clinical procedures, there are risks associated with abortion.

Physical

  • Heavy bleeding
  • Infection
  • injury to the uterus or cervix
  • Although rare, maternal deaths have occurred (most frequently due to infection and undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy)

Emotional

Many women feel relief immediately after an abortion. Some may not appear to experience any negative impact even in the long term. However others,  (immediately or years later) link their abortion to feelings of:

  • Sadness
  • Depression
  • Anger
  • Guilt
  • Anxiety
  • Emotional numbing
  • Anniversary grief
  • Flashbacks of the abortion
  • Increased risk of alcohol and drug abuse
  • Relationship problems
  • Self-harm and suicidal thoughts

It is important to know that as many as 1-in-17 pregnant women using abortion pills need hospital treatment for complications*.

If this happens to you a surgical abortion may be required to complete the process.

We cannot say how abortion would impact you personally. However, Her Truth shares the untold stories of women (and occasionally men) in their own words following abortion.Care for women includes testimonies after a medical abortion at home.

Some studies have linked induced abortion to an increased risk of infertility, future miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies, future premature birth or low birth weight, a possible link to breast cancer, and a range of mental health problems.

Did you know that the largest ever analysis of research (published in the British Journal of Psychiatry covering more than 800,000 women), concluded that:

“Women who had undergone an abortion experienced an 81% increased risk of mental health problems”
